Two guys as different as a watchmaker and a television editor have to free Carlos Gardel's soul from a strange pact with the devil, who has it trapped. To break the spell, these fans of El Morocho del Abasto, and improvised exorcists, need to find a mythical figure of such popular force as Gardel: the great Diego Maradona.

The Argentine was a player whose light feet and personality saw him gain many fans across the world, along with a religious-like following in Argentina.  But despite his success on the pitch which included a World Cup triumph and two Serie A titles with Napoli, Maradona was someone who often found himself associated with the darker sides of society off it.  During his time at Napoli, there were frequent links to the mafia, along with an addiction to drugs.  This all came to a head at the 1994 World Cup in the USA when Maradona testsed positive ephedrine. Vickers is perfectly partnered by James Levine’s conducting and the Met’s sensational orchestra and chorus. Renata Scotto is an appealing Desdemona, Cornell MacNeil is a menacing Iago, and Franco Zeffirelli’s production is deservedly legendary.

Giuseppe Verdi's opera of religion, revenge and redemption gets the star treatment in this 1993 Metropolitan Opera production conducted by James Levine and starring Plácido Domingo as the cuckolded man of God at the center of the tale. Sharon Sweet sings the role of Domingo's adulteress wife and Vladimir Chernov plays the vengeful father in this rarely staged gem directed by Giancarlo del Monaco and filmed by Brian Large.

In an Opening Night performance for the history books, the great Plácido Domingo sings the title role of Verdi’s Otello for the first time at the Met. This supremely demanding part was to become his signature role, an accomplishment against which other interpreters are still measured to this day. Domingo stars opposite Sherrill Milnes’s conniving Iago and Gilda Cruz-Romo’s touching Desdemona, all brilliantly conducted by Music Director James Levine.
